The Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride

Same name, different meaning. Despite its similar moniker, the Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride focuses on community and camaraderie, rather than competition. Returning for the second year to South Washington County after stints in Lakeville and Rogers, the ride will mark its 48th year with this year’s event on April 27. Riders are able to choose between four different ride routes that travel the St. Croix River Valley.
   
Richard Newmark of Woodbury first rode in the Minnesota Ironman 15 years ago. It simply is an extension of his daily bike routes, ones that he rides every day in the spring, summer and fall. Newmark foregoes driving and on any given year rides up to 4,000 miles. “It is the best way to see the cities; you are not driving so fast that you cannot appreciate it,” he says.
   
Kate Lewis has only missed a few rides in her 20 years of experience riding in the Minnesota Ironman. A marathon runner, she made the transition from foot to bike effortlessly. “It’s another way to get to know the roads and the community,” she says. “Everyone comes out in full force and supports it. It’s fun to get out and broaden your horizons with the neighboring communities.” Lewis notes this camaraderie among riders as the thing that keeps her coming back, year after year.
