Hummingbird in Flight

Dee Dee Davis captures one of nature’s more intriguing birds.

Freelance art director and graphic designer Dee Dee Davis was at her Woodbury home on a September afternoon, looking through her kitchen window, when she noticed some activity. “We had received some very bad news that day, that my mother had terminal cancer,” Davis says. “When we came home from the hospital, the hummingbirds just showed up. There were two of them and they were constantly at the feeder, even looking in the windows at us at times.”

Davis grabbed her Canon EOS digital camera, with a 75-300 mm zoom lens, and quickly started snapping photos. “I am not a professional photographer by any means, and I really didn’t expect the photos to turn out that well,” she says. “So when this one won first place [in the Focus on Woodbury photo contest], I was elated.”
