The American Cancer Society started the Look Good, Feel Better program to cater to cancer survivors, particularly women, by introducing means of beauty enhancement during and after treatment. Maureen Hines, owner of Aesthetic Therapies in Woodbury and in her 16th year as a program facilitator, says, “It was created as a way to help people who are going through cancer treatments so they can continue about with their lives.” Losing hair and developing dry skin are side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and the program strives to provide practical solutions.
Look Good, Feel Better offers lessons on how to use makeup and skin products to enhance features such as eyebrows and eyelashes that may have been affected by treatment, as well as permanent makeup and nipple areola tattooing for those who have had breast reconstruction surgery. Hines makes it her personal mission to help and support the women who come through her office however she can. “Kindness goes a long way, and for people going through [treatment], kindness really means everything,” Hines says. “If I’ve helped one person, it was worth it.”
