East Ridge High school senior Karina Joiner took first place in the 2015 State 100 meter hurdles after breaking both conference and sectional records. We asked her about her athletic and academic career.
WBM: What are your track goals for this year’s season?
KJ: I competed individually outside of school for USA Track & Field so I started training last September. The [school] season officially started in March, so before the season started I did a lot of technique work in the weight room to get the logistics down so I could come in really fresh and ready.
WBM: What are your plans and aspirations after graduation?
KJ: I’m going to run track for Harvard University. I’m hoping to do well and hopefully win some national titles. Right now I’m just focusing on getting to college (laughs). I’m interested in pursuing a pre-law undergraduate major in sports management. If I go to law school, I’d become a sports attorney. And I’m planning on minoring in ceramics!
WBM: What keeps you motivated as a high school senior and athlete? What advice would you give to others?
KJ: I like to take things one step at a time. In school I concentrate on my studies, after school I go to practice and focus on track and training, and at home I hang out with my family and do my homework. My parents really stress the importance of academics; they’re big on good grades. I’m pretty determined in whatever I set my mind to. It’s important to know what you signed up for, know your limits and to be disciplined in going to practice and taking care of your body while also balancing grades. Sometimes you might have to skip an ice bath or lifting for a test. Challenge your limits—push yourself to try a different event. I think it’s all worth it in the end.
