Police dogs are typically known for their intelligence, and serious nature and appearance; they rarely relax or play in the public eye. Police puppies, however, seem to enjoy the endeavors of pups everywhere—frolicking around the yard, chomping on toys, and inhaling delicious treats. The Woodbury Police Department recently became acquainted with two of these young and energetic recruits, Buster and Cirrus. The puppies were gifted to the department through the Woodbury Police K9 Fund, a nonprofit established in 2015 to purchase K9s and train them and their handlers. After losing their basset hound of 14 years, Woodbury residents John and Jeanne Segar knew they didn’t want another long, full-time commitment to a dog as they neared retirement with travel plans. Now on their fourth puppy, Harry VI (or Prince Harry, as they call him), for nonprofit organization Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), they help train puppies to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. “This has been one of the most fulfilling relationships that we have had in our lifetime,” Jeanne Segar says.
