Choosing the Right Pair of Glasses with Help from the Experts

The frames you want, chosen by the experts.

As any good glasses wearer knows, choosing a pair of frames isn’t as easy as walking in the door and grabbing something off the shelf. Navigating the vast selection of shapes, sizes and colors is nearly impossible, and that doesn’t even take into account your personal style, prescription or face shape.

No, when searching for glasses, it’s basically impossible to go the road alone, even for the most independent shoppers. Woodbury residents can turn to Mead EyeCare and EyeWear where the staff has the expertise to help make your decision easy.

“Typically I start with the prescription,” says frame technician Darla Williams. “There have been a few times where someone chooses a frame and I have to tell them it won’t work with their prescription. You can love the glasses, but if the prescription doesn’t work, it isn’t going to work for you."

Part of what Williams, practice manager Audrey Mead and the rest of Mead’s staff do is help people find the tricky balance of style and functionality. Glasses have become a fashion accessory for so many people, that style is as important as being able to see clearly. Mead and Williams encourage people to let their personal style show. “People shouldn’t be afraid of color because it makes them look more youthful,” Mead says. “I also look for the opposite face shape. If you have a round face, you wouldn’t want a round pair of glasses.”

I, along with two others (including our esteemed editor Debbie Musser) had the chance to get a glasses makeover from the team at Mead. Here are the results (before and after):

Having worn glasses since she was a young girl, Karen Erickson has gone through plenty of frames over the years. “When I come in, I don’t know what I am looking for because it is overwhelming,” Erickson says. “I need guidance.”

Although Erickson likes her current frames, she feels like it was time for a little change. She didn’t have ideas of what she wanted going in to the makeover, and needed help to point her in the right direction.

“It’s fun,” Erickson says. “There’s no pressure and I ended up with glasses I wouldn’t normally select. I feel like I will get compliments on them.”

Debbie Musser

Woodbury Magazine editor Debbie Musser is more of a contact lens wearer. She’s had glasses for more than 40 years, but usually sticks with contacts because her frames are “old and boring.”

Coming to Mead, she wanted something with a little more color, knowing that she’d be more likely to wear glasses with a more stylish pair of frames. “I really need help with the shape,” Musser says. “I was very open to different colors, but I have a hard time with the shape of glasses.”

She ended up getting the pop of color she wanted, and the team helped select a shape that works for her. “Glasses are such a personal thing,” Musser says. “It’s something you wear everyday and it becomes part of your look and image.”

I can definitely say I’ve become bolder in my fashion choices over the years, and although I really like my current frames, I was open to making a switch. I definitely wanted something bolder and more fun.

What really did it for me, as someone who wears glasses all the time, is choosing a pair of frames that I could wear as a way of switching up my look on a given day. I tried on a handful of frames, but kept coming back to the ones I finally chose, and am very happy with the results.
