Wooodbury Community Theatre’s A Christmas Story - The Musical opens on The Loft Stage this month. The holiday comedy takes place in the 1940s, following young Ralphie as he attempts to convince his parents, teacher, Santa and anyone else who will listen that a Red Ryder BB gun is the perfect Christmas gift. With dozens of classic, quotable lines and plenty of laughs, this show appeals to kids and adults alike.
The musical is based on the 1983 film adaptation of Jean Shepherd’s 1966 novel In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. Audience members are sure to relate to the retelling of Ralphie’s experiences with bullies, family at Christmastime and one burning Christmas wish. “It’s essentially a memory piece that looks back with a very childlike lens on Christmas,” says director Amanda Hestwood. “I love this story and I’ve loved the movie for years. I was really excited when they turned it into a musical.”
The score was written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who just won a Tony Award for Dear Evan Hansen and an Oscar for La La Land, both in the same year. “The show requires dance also so that’s going to be a fun component, to work with some young, talented dancers,” Hestwood says.
