The spring home selling season is here, and if you’re going to list, it’s time to start preparing your home. Interior designer Diane Kane of Pomegranate Designs, who often works with clients getting ready to sell, offers her expert home staging advice.

“The most important thing is street appeal.” It is imperative that your lawn is groomed. Beautiful planters by the front door also add an appealing touch.

“The foyer is a key area.” Kane recommends accenting this area with a current-design area rug.

“The main thing when I go in to stage a home is clearing a lot of clutter.” Get rid of excess décor like floral arrangements and family photos, remove unnecessary furniture pieces and bring only core elements together into conversation groupings. “Have a professional help with that,” she says.

“Lighting has the biggest effect in a room.” Make sure all windows are clean (and that blinds and drapes are open) so as much light as possible comes in. Purchase current lamps and floor fixtures to make sure there’s proper lighting. “It gives it [the room] life.”

“Less is more.” This is important when it comes to repainting and decorating. Kane emphasizes the advantage of using neutral colors like taupe-beige and grays for paint and even bedding.
