First originating in the Roman Empire, and later spreading throughout Europe, mulled wine was recreated in the Nordic culture as glögg. So take inspiration from the Vikings, hunker down this winter and sip on your new favorite drink.
Mulled Wine

- 1 bottle of red wine (recommended: High Valley Zinfandel)
- ¼ cup orange liquor or brandy (recommended: Triple Sec)
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 4 cloves
- 4 Tbsp. sugar (optional)
- 1 tsp. black peppercorn (optional)
- 1 orange
- star anise, to garnish
Cut your orange into slices and combine your red wine, orange liqueur or brandy, black peppercorn, garnish, three cinnamon sticks and sugar into a large saucepan on simmer for 15–20 minutes. Do not let boil. When finished, ladle into mugs, garnish, if desired, and enjoy.
