The seasons are shifting; the air is cooler, the leaves are on the brink of transforming into fiery shades of red and orange, and thoughts are returning to cozy autumn nights. With these changes, many women are ready to replace their jellybean nail polish with hot fall colors. Sam Schoenecker, nail technician at Salon Ultimo, offers guidance with her three top picks for the perfect fall manicure.
Lincoln Park After Dark
According to Schoenecker, dark colors are big for fall, and she recommends this moody purple polish. This is a popular option for those who want a grown-up version of traditional black. OPI, $9.
Every Month is Oktoberfest
As the name suggests, this polish was made for fall. With just a hint of shimmer, this deep plum polish looks sophisticated, not juvenile. Schoenecker aptly describes it as “a classic car color.” OPI, $9. You Don’t Know Jacques
Gray is often thought of as dull, somber and just plain ugly. In this case, however, gray feels fresh. Schoenecker herself wears this glossy gray polish year-round. “It’s my favorite [color],” she says. “Gray goes very well with any skin tone.” OPI, $9.
Other hot fall trends include two-tone nails -- such as ombré -- emerald green, and nail art. For nail art, people are turning to social media for inspiration. Schoenecker says her clients like to bring in photos they like from Pinterest to have painted on their nails. Many opt to limit the art to their ring finger only. “Otherwise it gets to be too much,” Schoenecker says. —Lauren Bedosky
