After two tours of duty with the Marines in Afghanistan in 2010 and 2012, Michael Medina was ready for civilian life. Last year, the Woodbury resident launched his popular fitness class, energy tabata boot camp basics, at Energy Pilates Fitness Yoga. Medina was quick to incorporate his military experience into the class, and teaches it with the same intensity as a military boot camp, while accounting for individual fitness levels.
For Medina, leading the class provides a way for him to utilize knowledge from the armed forces, and the class challenges fitness junkies looking for a high-intensity workout. “Go at your own pace, but I’m going to push you,” Medina says. “You’re always able to do one more.”
John Opgrande and Jenny Wiener regularly attend Medina’s 6 a.m. class and appreciate the high expectations Medina places on the participants. “[Michael] is really good at pushing you past that mental point where you think you can’t do any more,” Wiener says. Opgrande says Medina creates an environment where everyone is able to succeed. “He sets the tone that anyone who wants to put in the effort can do it,” Opgrande says
