Around the World in 18 Days

Dick Hanson’s adventure: 6 cities, 5 countries, 11 flights and 5 different airlines.

Since retiring from 3M in 2001, Dick Hanson and his son DJ, who lives and works in Manhattan, have designed and taken three international trips together. For the past few years, Hanson has been shaping what he refers to as “my final globe-trot, considering my increasingly obvious mortality.”

Hanson’s first objective for the father and son trip: it had to be literally around the world. “And it had to include India,” Hanson says. “Then, I selected four key cities I’ve never visited that could reasonably be done in two weeks: Shanghai, Hong Kong, New Delhi and Dubai.”

The pair took their around the world adventure last April. At DJ’s suggestion, they also swung by Oslo on the way home. “I was delighted, as we are of Norwegian heritage and DJ had never been there,” Hanson says.

We’re pleased that Hanson brought the April 2015 Woodbury Magazine, capturing these picturesque photos. “I like to describe the trip as Inez’s global adventure too,” he says, referring to the magazine cover photo of Inez Oehlke. “It was an absolutely incredible journey. My wife and son don’t believe that’s my last international trip. But if it is, what a way to end it!”
