A fun, unique summer pastime for children and families is closing out the season this month. Woodbury’s Puppet Wagon will offer its last shows of the summer August 13 through 16 with its final show of the season at Colby Park.
The Puppet Wagon was started back in 1980 as a project of Woodbury’s recreation department. Woodbury High School art teacher Joan Leedahl was asked to contribute to the idea and she turned the design of the wagon over to her students.
Today, the Puppet Wagon holds shows at dozens of park locations throughout the season. One of those locations is the Woodbury Lakes shopping center, which typically hosts up to 50 people for each Puppet Wagon show. “This will be the second summer that Woodbury Lakes has been a stop for the Puppet Wagon,” says Laurie Mordorski, marketing manager for Woodbury Lakes. “We always see a great turnout at the Wednesday morning kids’ shows during our summer concert series, so we decided that having the Puppet Wagon at the shopping center would provide another fun summer activity for young families.”
Each show features a fun story, from the puppets’ trip to the moon to a trip to the jungle. “The Puppet Wagon gives residents a brief but fun way to enjoy the parks in town,” says recreation specialist Elizabeth Owens. “It’s easy to add to your weekly routine, you get outside, you talk to your neighbors and you get to enjoy a silly, goofy free puppet show.”
