When she found out that the Woodbury Heritage Society is working on fundraising campaigns to preserve the historic Miller Barn, “I wanted to get some pictures of it in different seasons,” says photographer Jane Andersen.
As a hobbyist photographer, Andersen takes photos of almost anything and everything. “One of the most satisfying aspects of photography is documenting, which is one reason I took this picture,” she says. She’s lived in Woodbury for 24 years and became intrigued by photography when her husband bought her her first digital camera several years ago. “I’ve been a little obsessed ever since,” she says.
The technique she used for this photo (which received an honorable mention in the City Landmarks category of our 2017 Focus on Woodbury contest) is simple and effective: “To get the angle of the barn, I knelt down low and focused on it through the grasses,” she says.

Andersen offers her prints by themselves, or framed by her. “I frame my prints with unique frames I find at secondhand shops,” she says.
Andersen also makes a variety of other gifts from her images, including coasters, magnets and wood plaques with a varnish over the photo instead of glass. She recently began making bookmarks.
In November, Andersen returns to the Central Park Art Fair for another year as a vendor. She can also be found showing and selling her photos and gifts at the Guardian Angels Christmas Boutique.
