There seems to be no better fit for the new managing director at the Merrill Community Arts Center (MCAC) than local resident and longtime volunteer Meg May. A former kindergarten teacher of Spanish at St. Ambrose of Woodbury Catholic School, May assumed her new position this past summer. Her new role includes facilitating behind-the-scenes work alongside executive director Michelle Witte, among other responsibilities.
Since the MCAC settled into its permanent space in 2011, the organization has been growing by leaps and bounds. In fact, its prior performances have sold out, drawing large audiences during last year’s production of Les Miserables.
Now with bigger facilities (the Loft Stage and Black Box Theater at East Ridge High School and the Rivertown Drive location), more shows per year and an increasing demand for people who want to participate in the arts, the organization needed another strong leader to ensure a seamless flow from one production to another. When Witte found May, who is both passionate and organized, she knew she would be the right person for the job. “Her husband and kids have all participated in the arts, and Meg herself has always been a dependable and knowledgeable volunteer,” Witte says. “It’s great to have someone on board with over a decade of experience.”
In addition to knowledge and experience, May believes in the mission statement of the theater—to provide opportunities for artful interaction. “I think Woodbury theater is a gem in our community,” May says. “We’re giving our time, talent and resources to benefit the community in a unique way, and I’m happy to be a part of it.”
