High school orchestra students generally play with their peers. Once a year, the student performers from South Washington County Schools collaborate with an older generation and play side by side.
The Side by Side Orchestra Concert pairs the East Metro Symphony Orchestra (EMSO) with around 130 high school orchestra students. Kelly Karow, the current orchestra director for the district, emphasizes the importance of students realizing how they can continue playing after graduation. “I enjoy most the collaboration between the musicians in the community and the high school students,” Karow says. “I also think it’s great because it shows students how they can be involved in music after high school.”
Karow collaborates with EMSO to determine the song list and foster a connection between the musicians and her students. She says this goes beyond simple playing by developing conversations among players for a more “in depth musical experience.”
The performance is free, but Karow and the orchestra department request a free will donation to help offset performance costs.
