Touch- down!
Youth football competition comes to Woodbury.

Woodbury will welcome kids from Minnesota and Wisconsin looking to boot and toss their way to victory during the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition, set for October 16-19. The competition, open to boys and girls ages 6-15, has three stages: passing, placekicking and punting contests. Typically hosted at the Metrodome, this year Woodbury takes center stage as Bielenberg Sports Center, Woodbury High School and East Ridge High School will host events during the competition while the new Minnesota Vikings stadium is constructed.
Wilson Edwards, director of youth football in Minnesota, anticipates a high quality event despite the change of venue. “The event isn’t going to be smaller [because of the new venue]; the event is growing,” Edwards says. Dave Black, Bielenberg Sports Center manager, looks forward to showcasing Woodbury’s state-of-the-art facilities to others. “Anytime we can show off the field house and bring in people from other communities, we’re excited,” Black says, adding that Woodbury venues were selected after Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens talked with competition executives at last year’s event.
Edwards takes pride in growing Minnesota’s involvement the last five years and hopes to eventually host the Youth Football Super Bowl. “It would be a big accomplishment for Minnesota and show how strong youth sports are here,” he says. —Joe Dixon
