Dear Veterans,
Thank you. Thank you for your service. Thank you for your dedication to our country and our community. Thank you for everything you’ve done and will do in the future.
We want you to know how much you mean to Woodbury. We support you in everything you do, because we know you support us. Whether you are just returning home from overseas, or you’re long retired and have been part of the community for years, hopefully you are aware of all the programs and services available to you.
No matter what you are looking for, the best places to start are the American Legion and VFW. Each works with veterans in many ways to help connect them with services, from medical assistance to support groups with fellow veterans. Together, these organizations can help you get on your feet, should you need assistance.
Both groups also provide an invaluable voice for veterans in Washington—a voice that seems to become more muted everyday, as more WWII and Vietnam veterans pass away. “We fight for the rights of veterans and support the veterans and their families,” Dale Johnson, vice commander of the Woodbury American Legion, says. Johnson notes that it’s especially important for young veterans to get involved as the community continues to lose older veterans. The commitment isn’t too big: just a few events throughout the year, and the benefits are enormous.
Both the VFW and American Legion can get you connected with Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical services. Even if you don’t have a medical issue now, it’s important to sign up with the VA, because hospitals get more funding with more members. You become a member for life, and you never know when a medical issue will pop up.
For day-to-day challenges and events, there is the Yellow Ribbon Network. If you are stationed away from home, or returned and are suffering from medical problems that keep you from completing everyday tasks, the Yellow Ribbon Network can help coordinate helpers for chores like yard work, auto repairs, snow removal, transportation and so many other needs that become daunting for many military families.
All these groups work together, with a goal of supporting you and your family. As Veterans Day approaches, we hope that, in addition to reaching out to the organizations at your disposal, you will take time to honor your fellow veterans at the Woodbury Lions Veterans Memorial. Every branch of the military throughout history is honored there, and it is just one of the ways we remember all those who fought for us.
We know that there will never be enough ways to say “thank you.” Hopefully, the programs offered in Woodbury show how much your service means to us. The community will always be here to support you.
Sincerely,
The residents of Woodbury
