Monty Python’s Spamalot is a musical adaptation of the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Woodbury Community Theatre (WCT) is proud to present this musical March 17-26 on the Loft Stage at East Ridge High School.
Michelle Witte, WCT’s executive director, has been wanting to do this show for some time. “We were at a directors’ meeting a couple years back…she brought the scripts and everything,” says Marcie Panian Berglund, director of Spamalot, who sounds just as excited to finally bring this show to life.
Those familiar with Monty Python might deem the comedic style as irreverent or frank. While this brand of comedy can seem crude to some, Berglund is very optimistic about bringing this outrageous production to the stage. “Comedy is my area; I love to do comedy and this is a rip- roaring comedy, just my style,” Berglund says.
Berglund describes this production as “bawdy to a certain degree” and does not hesitate to inform us that this particular production is for adults only. “This is a musical based on the movie, it’s very Monty Python-esque and I will stay true to the Monty Python flavor,” she says. Although she forewarns potential audiences of the somewhat crude humor, she is excited to be doing things the Monty Python way. “If anything offends you…anything at all, don’t come,” she says with a chuckle.
