Woodbury High School Choir presents Annual Spring Cabaret

Mark your calendar this month for Woodbury High School’s annual cabaret show, It’s a Matter of Time.
Woodbury High School choir students are gearing up for their traditional cabaret show.

The Woodbury High School choir program has been presenting its annual cabaret production for more than 15 years, longer than current music department chair and director of choirs Daryl Timmer has been at the school. The cabaret is a spring production that features three choirs; each choir performs two solo numbers that are costumed and choreographed in addition to three mass choir numbers throughout the show. In addition, individuals from the choirs can audition for solo, duet or group numbers. One group of students acts as a writing team and creates a script to carry the show along. “It becomes like a quasi mini-musical,” Timmer says. “There’s singing and dancing with a little sketch between songs to connect them.”

The cabaret will be featured in both a main stage production and a dinner theatre show. According to Timmer, the dinner theatre allows for more solo acts and showcases more student talent that isn’t shown on the main stage. Every year, Timmer chooses a different theme for the cabaret that fits the unique personality of the choirs. This year’s theme, It’s a Matter of Time, focuses on songs that represent a specific point in time. “I look at pop songs from all genres—rock ‘n’ roll, bubble gum, Broadway and show tunes—and research more than 100 songs with “time” in the title,” Timmer says.
