Woodbury Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest

This fall, hundreds of Woodbury students will take part in a global project: the Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest. Woodbury’s Lions Club works with participating middle schools to coordinate the local branch of the contest, in which kids ages 11–13 design and create posters based on the year’s theme; for 2013, that’s Our World, Our Future. The contest is important on several levels, says Emily McIntyre, who teaches art at Lake Middle School. In addition to encouraging kids to think about global citizenship, she says, the contest allows them to “show their creativity and demonstrate techniques from [art] class.” Mark Cavaleri, who runs the contest for the Woodbury Lions Club, is impressed every year with students’ creations. “We’re a much smaller world today,” he says, “and we have to be more aware of neighbors. [The kids] are quite amazing to me.”The top posters will be submitted early in November to a panel of local professional artists who will judge on originality, expression of theme and artistic element, then choose one winner from each school and an overall Woodbury city winner, who will be announced on November 11.
