Valentine’s Day can be predictable. Flowers, chocolate, dinner at a nice restaurant. This year, we’ve picked four alternatives, including three that get you outdoors, to rekindle the spark or start you out on the right foot with someone new.
Ice Skating
What’s more romantic than holding hands while gliding across the ice? This winter activity is great for date night, says Bob Klatt, Woodbury’s parks and recreation director. “It’s a free activity and offers the opportunity to be outside and enjoy some physical activity with your significant other.”
And a rink is likely within a short distance from your home: Colby Lake, Evergreen West, Kargel and Shawnee rinks will be open 1 to 8 p.m. on Valentine’s Day (a Sunday) and are open 4 to 9 p.m. on weekdays if you’re celebrating a few days late. All of these rinks also have warming houses to escape from the February chill, if needed. And don’t forget Bielenberg Sports Center’s outdoor recreational skating rink, open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Valentine’s Day.
Most of all, an ice skating date is a great reason to spend the rest of the evening cozied up by the fire with your date and some hot chocolate—or hot toddies.
Hit the Slopes
Want the outdoors, and also to feel like you’re taking your date on a mini-vacation? Afton Alps will get you away from the city, and give you some thrills as you speed down the hill on your skis or snowboard.
On Valentine’s Day, $56 or less will buy you a day pass, and there are six different dining options for you and your date, so finding food you both enjoy won’t be a problem. And if you decide you do want to turn the date into a vacation, the Afton House Inn has suites that include a Jacuzzi to warm up after a snow-filled day.
“It’s something different,” Jesse Ecklund of Afton Alps says. “It’s something out of the ordinary—something active rather than sitting around,” perfect for the couple who just can’t sit still.
Don’t Forget Fido
Couples with pups might not want to leave him or her behind, so include your four-legged friend on your date. Head to Woodbury’s Dale Road Open Space & Off-Leash Dog Park on the city’s southeast side for a winter walk.
The park’s hours are from dawn to dusk, and visitors can enjoy the 70 acres of land filled with trails. The park also has a shelter, perfect for giving your dog a rest, and for pulling out a thermos of hot chocolate for you and your date.
Arcade Night
For those more inclined to play games indoors, head to Pinz for bowling and laser tag. With this date activity, “You could get to know the person by having fun,” general manager Amy Rowlinson says.
On Valentine’s Day, $6.99 will buy you a game of laser tag at Zap City, and if it’s a double date, everyone can play. For bowling, $29.99 will buy you an hour on Sunday, but happy hours and specials are also available.
