Fat Tire Race

Steven Shor heads to Carver Lake Park’s unique winter bike race.

When most of us think of Carver Lake, we think of its peaceful blue waters and woodsy trails, a respite in our city that truly has that “up north” feel. Each January, the park’s off-road cycling trails play host to the Carver Lake Cold Catfish Cup, a popular winter bike race, and this year’s event is set for January 25.

Last winter, Steven Shor read about the bike race and headed to Carver Lake Park to take some action photos. “I was interested in seeing the race itself; getting some photos to enter in the Focus on Woodbury photo contest was secondary,” Shor says. “I used my Nikon D300 digital SLR with 18-200 lens.”

Shor, whose photos have earned honors over the many years of the photo contest, captured the intensity and dedication of race participants, set amidst the snow-covered hills of one of Woodbury’s most beautiful parks.
