The sighting of a bald eagle and its chick is a special experience. The female parent does the majority of the feeding and brooding while the male parent is the hunter and scavenger during the early week of the chick’s life.
The nests of eagles are large stick structures, usually located high in large trees near water. They are typically 5 to 6 feet wide and 3 to 4 feet tall; eagles reuse and add to their nests each year.
Local resident Romaine Bayless spotted this eagle’s nest on Settles Ridge Parkway near Hudson Road in Woodbury. The retired reproductive endocrinologist was following the development of the chick when he snapped this spectacular photo.
“Photography and travel are my passions; I travel in the U.S. and internationally to participate in photography tours and workshops,” Bayless says. “I don’t know if I travel so that I have material for my photography, or if I take photos so that I have a good reason to travel.”
