Each month, we feature one of the photos from our 2019 Focus on Woodbury photo contest. This month, we asked photographer Sigrid Dabelstein to tell us about “School’s Out for the Summer!” which took third place in our Activities & Events category.
What kind of camera did you use?
I shoot with a Canon EOS 8oD.
When and where did you take the photo?
I took the photo on the last day of school at Woodbury Middle School (WMS). I’m a sixth-grade teacher there and had my camera for the fun last-day-of-school festivities. WMS has a tradition of creating this tunnel for students to run through to say goodbye to the great year behind and say hello to the fun summer ahead!
What’s your favorite thing about the image, or what struck you about the scene and inspired you to take it?
Every time I see the photo, I hear the children’s laughter and the teachers yelling, “Bye, kids! Happy summer!” It’s a sound that cannot be unheard, and it’s one that brings a smile to anyone’s heart and mind.
What’s your photography background?
I’m one year into professional photography and I love it! I took a class with Kent Johnson through Community Ed … and hit the ground running ever since. Teacher by day, photographer by night and weekend!
