This photo looks like a print from Currier and Ives, known for those picturesque panoramas of gorgeous winter scenes. It was taken by Steven Shor at Eagle Valley Golf Course last winter at the 40th annual Sleigh and Cutter Festival. This unique event, which at one time was part of the St. Paul Winter Carnival, has been held at Eagle Valley the past few years. “This is the best way to spend a few hours in the snow; it’s nostalgic and a lot of fun,” says John Block, event organizer. “There are free rides in a nine-passenger sleigh, and the horses go nice and slow.”
Shor used a Nikon D300 digital camera with a Tamron 18-270 lens to capture this photo. “I love the event and try to attend each year,” he says. “The man in the photo enters almost every year, and he has a smaller breed of horse that does very well at pulling sleighs and carriages.”
This year’s Sleigh and Cutter Festival is set for Sunday, January 29 at Eagle Valley Golf Course. Hitch time is at 11:30 a.m.; the drive takes place between noon and 2:30 p.m., with free rides for the public. For more information, contact Block at 612.849.2115.
