Brynn Carlson wasn’t like most students in high school. From her 4.27 GPA to being the first girl ever to graduate early from St. Paul private school Cretin-Derham Hall (CDH), she’s always stood out—even as a kid. “I started at Saint Ambrose of Woodbury Catholic School and got accepted to Gateway, the gifted education program of South Washington County Schools,” she says.
At CDH, Carlson played volleyball, leading her team to two conference titles and was named all-state twice. She also became a National Merit Commended Scholar after receiving a very high score on her PSAT. Carlson graduated from CDH in November 2016 and started college at Kansas State University in January 2017. She’s happy that she was able to pave the way for other girls. “I hope that my graduating early will push other female athletes at CDH or wherever to know that it’s possible and not only guys can do it,” she says.
Now at K-State, Carlson is preparing for volleyball season and tackling a full class load. “I absolutely love it.
I’m so happy with my decision to come here early,” she says. “I think overall it’s been a really positive experience. I have no regrets.”
Carlson is studying dietetics and is hoping to become a dietician in the future. It’s no surprise she may graduate early from K-State as well. “I think that it’s definitely a strong possibility, graduating early, and then getting started on my master’s,” she says. —Ashley Simonson
