The rare astronomical phenomenon, a blood moon, occurs when the moon is closest to earth in its orbit and coincides with a lunar eclipse, leaving the moon in the Earth’s shadow. The gorgeous shade of intense red-orange accounts for the term “blood moon,” and it won’t happen again until the year 2033.
On September 28-29, 2015, we were treated to the majesty of a blood moon. The beautiful sight was visible from the Americas, Europe, Africa, west Asia and the east Pacific.
Local resident Steve Kobayashi set his alarm and headed out on his deck at 4 a.m. to snap this spectacular photo of the blood moon over Woodbury, using a Canon 60D. The contrast between the red-orange moon and the shadow of the trees against the dark sky makes for a truly stunning photo.
“I take nature-related photos whenever I can, but my favorite subjects are my grandchildren,” Kobayashi says.
Congratulations to the winners of the 2016 Focus on Woodbury Photo Contest. We look forward to featuring some of the fantastic photos in the magazine throughout 2017.
