For kids on summer break, the last thing on their minds is school. On the other hand, many parents often worry about their children losing all the knowledge learned from the previous year and falling behind during the start of a new school year. Mariette Hoefler, family engagement specialist and assessment coordinator at Sylvan Learning Center, says many parents often worry about “summer slide,” especially in math, reading and writing, which will inevitably happen without proper maintenance work.

To keep kids’ brains sharp during the summer, she recommends that children participate in Sylvan Learning Center programs at least twice a week, which will help them retain knowledge from the previous school year and also get them ahead of the curve for next fall. “Summer is a time when we can actually get them ahead,” Hoefler says. “So, when they start school, there’s no need to refresh or rebuild the skills they lost.”

Sylvan Learning Center offers many programs for children of all ages during the summer, including Math Edge, writing camps, robotics and STEM classes. Hoefler says that the ideal plan includes two reading sessions and two math sessions per week. Even just a few sessions a week will help students avoid that summer slide and enter the new school year feeling confident in their academic skills.
