“I think the power of photography is memory and emotion,” says Susan Jamison, who received first place for her submission titled Topsy Turvy Summer in the People & Families category for the 2020 Focus on Woodbury photo contest.
“Finding my niche took some time; I wanted to do everything at first. I didn’t decide to narrow until I found what I enjoyed most,” she says. Read more about Trick Shot
“I’m not a photographer, I just enjoy taking photos when the opportunity arises,” says Samu Miller, who received second place for his submission titled Her Favorite Season, in the Pets category for Woodbury Magazine’s annual photo contest.
It's that time of year again: The Focus on Woodbury photo contest has returned for its 19th year of beautiful photos of our community. This photo contest, presented by Woodbury Magazine, showcases the best photographers in our community—not to mention the subjects that give them inspiration.

You never know what will pop up in the garden. Just ask Sarah Kroening. “While harvesting tomatoes last August, I noticed a small speck of what appeared to be dirt on one of the tomatoes,” Kroening says. “Upon further inspection, I noticed the perfect swirl of a snail shell. Christine Quirk, 22, has lived in Woodbury her entire life with one exception: She went away to New York for college, then moved back to town in May 2016. This fun photo was taken in her family’s pool last summer. “I love making bubble rings underwater and thought how cool it would look in a picture,” Quirk says. “I gave it a try and the result was amazing.” Read more about Focus on Woodbury: Fishy Face
“Can you believe I used my old Samsung Galaxy S III cell phone to capture this photo?” says Cheryl Singer. “I saw this gorgeous rainbow and decided to stop and take a photo with my cell phone. Last summer, Mandi Folks and her family attended the Carver Lake Camp Out, organized annually by the city of Woodbury Parks and Recreation department. “Our family loves Minnesota summers; we try to spend as much time outdoors as possible,” Folks says. “Our children enjoyed the camp out’s scavenger hunts and games, s’mores and playing at the beach. I had brought my camera along and when I noticed one family’s dog (Lola) reaching down for a drink in the lake, I thought it would make a beautiful image with the ripples in the background.” Read more about Focus on Woodbury: Thirsty Pup at Carver Lake
“I am always taking photos,” says Gina Osowski. “Last spring, I was watching these mourning doves as I was sitting at the kitchen table. The doves show up every spring. Yep, I’m a bird watcher; they are interesting creatures!” Read more about Focus on Woodbury: Love Doves
When Mandi Folks and her family moved into their Woodbury home in 2012, “it was in very rough condition,” she says. “We have been fixing it up little by little over the past three years, and finally got around to repairing the bathtub in the master bathroom. Our three boys were delighted with their first opportunity to take a bubble bath. As you can tell, Maverick, 5, Mitchell, 7, and Macallan, 3, jumped head-first into the bubbles with no reservations.
