January 2015

In the January issue of Woodbury Magazine you'll meet two local teens who motivate each other, find fashionable inspiration from Momentum Fitness Jewelry, and find the healthiest foods around town.

It’s a seed…it’s a berry…it’s…superfood! This is not just a nutrition marketing buzzword—we all know that some foods are more healthful for you than others, and it follows that some are, in fact, super for you.

When most of us think of Carver Lake, we think of its peaceful blue waters and woodsy trails, a respite in our city that truly has that “up north” feel.

The success of Woodbury has everything to do with the community itself, and the Woodbury Area Chamber of Commerce Gala sets out to recognize this excellence.

When temperatures drop and snow starts to fly, most Minnesotans flock to the gym to escape the cold. But there is an unusual breed of athletes in Woodbury who refuse to let the weather push them indoors. Instead, they strap on their shoes, don face masks and head to their favorite trail.

Woodbury resident Amy Cochrane and her friend Wendy Parks have always loved living actively. Cochrane describes herself as a gym junkie who also enjoys hiking and cycling; Parks stays active by biking, canoeing and camping.

If you’re a parent, releasing your baby to preschool is a milestone that comes with angst and tears—mostly on the part of the parent. As a mom of 3- and 5-year-old boys, I know this better than anyone.

When Donna Lloyd starting snapping pictures in 2009, she had no idea it would lead to her becoming a published author.

For the Friedman family of Woodbury, traditional schooling has never been a good fit. Lynn Friedman homeschooled her kids when they were younger, and tried putting them in public school for about five years before deciding it wasn’t working. The schedule just didn’t fit her family’s needs.

We flip the calendar to 2015—a new year, a clean slate for the future. This is a time to pause and reflect on the year that has passed, and look ahead to what’s on the horizon.

We at Woodbury Magazine are very proud of our art team. This group of talented individuals brings the magazine to life each month with spectacular photography and design.

Thirty-five years ago, the Adamidis family started Dino’s Gyros, a restaurant serving fresh Mediterranean fare. “Fresh” is a large part of the Dino’s identity and one that the restaurant has chosen to highlight in a bold way.

Best friends Emma Schifsky and Lily Van der Sman traveled over the Atlantic with Woodbury Magazine to visit Lily’s Oma (Grandma) and Opa (Grandpa) in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Tom and Maureen Plante and Clare and Tom Schisler caught up on the local news while in Switzerland as they traveled through Europe.

One of Woodbury’s original businesses, Wooddale Fun Zone, recently celebrated its 40th year.

Anytime Fitness’ headquarters, currently located in Hastings, will settle into its new home in Woodbury in the spring of 2016.

It’s January, and that means it’s time for the fourth annual Cold Catfish Cup Winter Bike Race at Carver Lake Park. The race will take place January 25 at noon.

Music Together, a world-renowned, research-based early childhood program, is a longtime partner of Woodbury’s parks and recreation department and a favorite of the Woodbury community. The program is for children, from birth to kindergarten, and “the grownups that love them.”

Remember when you were a senior in high school and you were a lacrosse captain, sat on student council, belonged to the National Honor Society, sang in choir, were a designated sports superfan, and owned your own photography business? (Gasp for breath).
